Olivia Rodrigo has shared how Kendrick Lamar and Chappell Roan influenced her song “Expectations,” which now features a new remix with Roan.
During an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Rodrigo explained that she originally envisioned the track as a mantra, built around lyrics listeners could repeat to themselves. Kendrick Lamar’s hit “HUMBLE.” helped inspire that approach.
As highlighted by Billboard, Rodrigo also credited Roan’s confidence and attitude as creative influences while developing the original song.
The two artists later collaborated on a remix, with Roan contributing a verse inspired by her personal experiences with relationships and dating women.
Rodrigo recalled exchanging stories about disappointing dating experiences during their studio sessions, which helped shape the new version.
For Roan, the collaboration marked her first featured appearance on another artist’s song, bringing together two prominent voices in contemporary pop music.
The original “Expectations” appears on Rodrigo’s third studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, and debuted at No. 20 on the Hot 100 in June 2026.
